AMERICAN CHAI is a funny,
heartfelt, coming-of-age story about
SUREEL, a first generation
Indian-American college boy who
can’t tell his traditional parents
he wants to be a musician, not a
doctor.
Growing up, Sureel just wanted to be
like his American friends, but his
strict, immigrant parents kept a tight
rein on his life. No dating, no
staying out late, no music, no R rated
movies, no prime time TV, etc. The
traditional Indian upbringing at home,
coupled with the progressive American
world around him, made for a life of
duality and deception.
Now, in his senior year at college,
Sureel’s deceptive ways have reached
an all-time low. His parents think
he’s graduating pre-med, but in
reality he’s a music major,
following his rock and roll dreams.
As the story unfolds, Sureel must
discover who he really is and what he
really wants. Does he pay the price
for following his dreams? Does he
reveal his secret life to his parents
and risk their rejection? In AMERICAN
CHAI, Sureel falls in love, faces the
music, and discovers his destiny.
The soundtrack features songs from
lead actor AALOK MEHTA, JEFF BUCKLEY,
the Philly-based band FATHEAD,
and the California-based South-Asian
underground artists RUKUS
AVENUE.

AMERICAN
DESI - New 2-DISC SET (English/Hindi
with English subtitles)
FUNNY - GREAT SLICE OF LIFE COMEDY
Deep
Katdare, Purva Bedi, Ronobir Lahiri,
Rizwan Manji
Special Features - Making of featurettes
Extended Scenes Audio Comentary by Deep
Katdare and Piyush Dinker Disc 2
contains the unreleased motion picture
soundtrack of 16 songs including hits by
Panjabi MC, Penn Masala, Karmacy, and
more 'American Desi' is a fun-loving
romantic comedy reminiscent of the great
teen films of the eighties like "16
Candles" and "Pretty in
Pink," mixed with the fresh hip-hop
style of "House Party" with a
uniquely Indian flavor. From Kris, an
All-American boy from India, to Ajay, an
Afro-Centric Hindu homeboy, to Farah, a
devoutly religious but modern Muslim
girl, 'American Desi' tells the story of
a unique set of characters and their
culture from a decidedly hip and
youthful point of view. Like the masala
films of India, 'American Desi' is so
full of music and dancing that it might
very well do to Bhangra and Garba what
"Saturday Night Fever" did to

Bollywood
Hollywood - A Deepa Mehta film in English
Rahul Khanna, Lisa RAy, Moushmi Chatterji,
Dina Pathak
Rahul Seth (Rahul Khanna) is a dashing
young millionaire who believes he is
"western" enough to rebel against
his mother (Moushmi Chatterjee) and
Grandmother (Dina Pathak). They are not keen
about his Caucasian girlfriend Kimberly
(Jessica Pare), who, to make matters
worse, is a pop star. Before you can say
"Karmic Intervention," Kimberly
dies in a freak accident and Rahul is
devastated. Instead of allowing him to mourn
in peace, Rahul'S mother sees the opportunity
she's been waiting for. She threatens to
call off his sister's wedding unless he
finds himself a "Nice Indian
Girl." Rahul enlists the services of
Sue (Lisa Ray), who accepts the deal to pose
as his Indian bride-to-be. Slowly, Sue
endears herself to Rahul's family. She
cracks a tough nut like his grandmother,
becomes friends with his sister and younger
brother and even calls the shots with his
chauffeur (Ranjit Chowdhry). It seems that
everyone is falling in love with Sue. Even,
perhaps, Rahul. During the course of his
sister's marriage celebrations, Sue breaks
through Rahul's tough exterior and helps him
find his heart again. But an incident
changes things. Does Rahul accept Sue for
who she is and what she represents? Lisa
seems to have a natural flair for comedy and
a knack to tickle the funny bone. Moreover,
she has grooved perfectly into the role that
is pretty much close to her real self. Rahul
Khanna too deliver goods playing the
‘half-confused, half-assured’ young man
who gradually falls in love with a girl who
‘detests’ the Indian men as
‘chumps’. All in all, ‘Bollywood
Hollywood’ is a film that will bring a
broad smile to faces, even the brooding
ones. Deepa Mehta is best known for
making controversial, searing dramas like
Fire and Earth, and has earned a reputation
as the new voice of Indian cinema. Her
latest film is a change of pace. Set in
Canada, Bollywood / Hollywood is a comedy
that infuses a North American sensibility to
the conventional Bollywood formula.
Contains adult situations and nudity.

EAST IS EAST (English)
Om Puri, Linda Bassett
East Is East is Damien O'Donnell's directorial debut, and he nails
the raucous tone from the opening scene, a church parade where the Pakistani
children must do some deft maneuvering to avoid being seen by their Muslim
father. At times such as these, the film is a straightforward comedy, and the
children milk the cultural differences for every laugh they can. Yet the film
takes a more somber turn when Saleem balks at his father's insistence on
arranging Saleem's marriage. Puri is magnificent straddling the line between
lovable father and brute enemy as he demands that the others obey his will, and
his performance can be difficult to watch as he metamorphoses. Sympathies toward
the characters shift throughout the film, highlighting the superb acting of the
entire cast. Ultimately, though, humor wins out, making East Is East a
tremendously fun film

FIRE (English) - $26.95
Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Kulbushan Kharbanda, Jaaved Jaferi
Banned in India, this 1996 film by Deepa Mehta powerfully demonstrates the
struggle of two women in love in a culture so deeply entrenched in ritual and
tradition. All this against a backdrop of an India which itself is struggling
for freedom from these same values. This film is both political and personal
and never too preachy or idealistic on either front. It is easy to see why
"Fire" has caused riots in India, but tragic nonetheless. A true
film such as this one deserves to be seen by all people of the world, not just
privileged westerners.
Contains adult situations and nudity.

dramatic march to the sea where Gandhi
led thousands of his fellow Indians to
prove that sea salt belonged to all and
was not just a British Commodity. A

PASSAGE
TO INDIA, A (English)
Starring: Peggy Ashcroft, Judy Davis, James Fox, Alec
Guinness
This adaptation of E.M. Forster's mysterious
tale of British racism in colonial India
turned out to be master director David Lean's
final film. Subtle and grand at the same
time, Lean's adaptation is faithful to the
book, rendering its blend of the mystical and
the all-too human with exquisite precision.
Judy Davis plays a young British woman
traveling in India with her fiancé's mother.
While visiting a tourist attraction, she has
a frightening moment in a cave--one that she
eventually spins from an instant of mental
meltdown into a tale of a physical attack
that ruins several lives. Lean captures
Forster's sense of awe at the kind of ageless
wisdom and inexplicable phenomena to be
encountered in India, as well as the British
tendency to dismiss it all as savage, rather
than simply different

RAMAYANA
(Animated - All Regions) The
Legend of Prince Rama
Animated
Ramayana for Children in English on DVD RAMAYANA
has been cinematized a number of times in India.
Universal themes, such as love, friendship, family
ties, selfless devotion, war and peace etc. that
RAMAYANA is replete with have inspired film makers
time and again to cinematize it. However, since
war scenes around which the story of RAMAYANA
revolves are full of fantasy, it might be
difficult to do justice to them with the usual
techniques of filming. Thus, there is no medium
but animation for depicting the divine powers of
the hero Rama and the devlish powers of his arch
rival Ravana, the life and death battle between
Lakshmana and Indrajit in the sky and the antics
of Hanuman - the other hero of this story - who
can fly like superman in the sky and change the
size of his body at will.
