K. Asif's MUGHAL-E-AZAM*, starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar
and Madhubala, is a tribute to the imagination, uphill struggle
and dedication of a genius. The popular legend may have been
filmed many times on the silver screen, but none can match MUGHAL-E-AZAM.
In terms of gloss as well as content.
The grandiose look, the haunting musical score, the breathtaking
battle scenes, the splendid performances, the heart-rending
emotions, the legendary romance between Salim and Anarkali and
of course, the confrontation scenes between Akbar and Salim…
MUGHAL-E-AZAM will always remain a benchmark.
This milestone in Indian cinema has now been revived in color
[in the original
version, only one song - 'Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya' - was in
color; the remaining film was in B&W].
Apart from its epic sweep, MUGHAL-E-AZAM has a delicate heart
- the romance between the legendary characters is one thing
you'd never forget.

Gurukant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan), the young-n-lean foreign returned villager with a funny moustache who gradually grows in years-n-stature as he treads on the road less traveled. He develops flab all over body unconditionally. Walks-n-talks in an awkwardly funny manner as he successfully climbs the ambitious stairs of his ‘bijness’. Just can’t take a No for an answer. And if a door doesn’t open by greasing then he doesn’t mind opening it forcefully.
After being the badshah of Polyster and being the leader of share market, Guru Bhai asks his loyal share holders, “Banna chahte ho Hindusthan ki sabse badi company.” An encore follows. Next stop is petro chemicals factory for which once again he uses coercion to make the ministers come on his side. A newspaper publisher Manik Dasgupta (Mithun Chakraborty) and a firebrand journalist Shyam (R. Madhavan) expose many irregularities in the functioning style of Guru Bhai.
Manik Dasgupta (Or Nanaji), a Gandhian, was the man whom Guru earlier considered as his father. Even though they respected each other personally, their ideologies clashed. Guru’s wife Sujatha (Aishwarya Rai) is the pillar of support that always stands by him in the biggest of crisis. He also has a few select men who belonged to him for reasons more than mere business interests.

UMRAO JAAN * Special 2 DVD Collectors Edition Hindi with English subtitles "Lutf hai Kaun si Kahani mein…
Aap beeti kahun ki jag beeti"
The real wealth of people is their culture and literary work. Which reflects the times, the place and the people.
One such work was Mirza Hadi Ruswa's Umrao Jaan Ada. Ruswa was a teacher in mathematics, science, philosophy & Persian. Ruswa was born in 1857 in Licknow and his parents died when he was 16 years old. 'Ruswa ` means a person without reputation. After going through the book, many literary minds felt that Ruswa could have named it 'Kahani Avadh Ki` or ' Sham-e-Avadh' , because it is a vivid depiction of life in Avadh. But then, 'Sham-e-Avadh' or 'An Evening in Avadh' means 'mehfils' of song and dance and gatherings of poets and the literati - a veritable celebration of life…And any such evening would be inconceivable without the presence of Umrao Jaan Ada. A courtesan and a poetess in her own right, Umrao Jaan was a name to be reckoned with in any description of life in Avadh. If Lucknow was the heart of Avadh. Umrao was the heart beat.
When she first came to Lucknow, she was Amiran, the eight year old daughter of a lower middle class family. Her father was a Jamadar at the 'Bahu Begum ka Makhbara' in Faizabad. A pious and simple man, he gave evidence in a case against Dilawar Khan, a habitual offender. Dilawar was sentenced to jail for ten years. After finishing his sentence Dilawar came out, only to kidnap little Amiran, cart her to Lucknow and sell her to a kotha owned by the astute Khanum Sahib. This was the vengeance and a few rupees as bonus. "Let her suffer a death worse than a death," he said.
A kotha in that age, especially that of Khanum was not only a cultural hub known for excellence in performing arts but also a temple of learning - learning the art of living. As an inmate of the kotha, little Amiran benefited the most. Khanum gave her the name 'Umrao', Bua Hussaini brought her up in style. Maulvi Sahib imparted education; Khan Sahib initiated her into the world of music while the great Kathak Acharya made her feet move to rhythm. In the company of Bismillah, Khurshid and Gauhar Mirza, Umrao developed varied skills including poetry. The pen name "Ada" was ample proof of proficiency in writing and presenting poetry that she went on to acquire.
Graduating in years, Umrao become a rage in Lucknow. A beauty that was stunning, a manner that was enticing and words that were soul stirring, made the name of Umrao Jaan mean sheer joy of watching and listening. Stepping into youth, she had to seek the love of her life. His name was Nawab Sultan. With the whole of Avadh at her feet. Umrao carved for Sultan's company. Somewhere deep inside her being, she had a dream of a husband, a family and a home. She chased her dream from one end of the rainbow to the other.
Would she realize her dream ever? Would she come face to face with Amiran once again?

15 PARK AVENUE*
Shabana Azmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Waheeda Rehman, Rahul Bose, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Kanwaljeet Singh, Soumitra Chatterjee
Anjali (Shabana Azmi) and her brother Mahesh were their mother Rewa's (Waheeda Rehman) children from her first marriage to Col. Mathur who had died soon after Mahesh was born. Rewa had brought up her two small children with the help of her late husband's friend - a bachelor by the name of Brigadier Sunil Mathur. Later, Rewa had married Sunil who had been a good surrogate father to Anjali and Mahesh and Mitali (Konkana Sen Sharma) had been born. She was the baby of the family, eighteen years younger than Anjali and thirteen years younger than Mahesh.
Anjali had married quite early but was soon divorced and came back to live with her mother and stepfather. Anjali was brilliant. She was a professor of Physics at a noted university in Calcutta and a writer of repute in her field. Mahesh had become quite successful in the corporate world and lived separately with his wife Padma, their eight year-old twins Samir and Shreya and newborn daughter Shalini. Mitali, the youngest, was the most unfortunate of Rewa's three children.
Whether it was because of Rewa's late pregnancy at the age of forty or simply as a result of some genetic quirk, Mitali or Meethi turned out to be mentally and physically challenged. She suffered both from chronic schizophrenia and epilepsy and had to be cared for by her family. In spite of her illness, Meethi had been quite functional up to her early twenties. She had even got engaged to a young man called Joydeep or Jojo, as she called him. The family, Meethi's elder sister Anu in particular, had been against the engagement at first because of Meethi's medical problems but had finally given in with good grace. There had been a huge engagement ceremony, which was more like a wedding than an engagement.
After that, disaster had struck! Meethi, who was working for a publishing house as a journalist, had gone by herself on a journalistic assignment outside Calcutta where political goons had raped her repeatedly. This incident had acted as a trigger for Meethi's hitherto dormant schizophrenia. Joydeep who was only twenty-six at the time, was unable to relate to Meethi any longer and had broken off the engagement. Meethi had become depressive to the point of being suicidal and had even had to be put away in a home for the mentally ill for a while.
Later she was brought back home but she was never the same again. She now lived completely in a delusional world where she was married to Jojo and was Mrs. Joydeep Ray with five children of her own. She believed that she lived with her husband and children at 15 Park Avenue and would insist on being taken to look for her house, which she could never find.
After Sunil died, Anu became the sole caregiver to her widowed mother and schizophrenic sister. As a result Anu became a much stressed individual and Meethi's doctor Kunal Barua advised her to take a break from work - to go away for a holiday far from her stressful city to a place where the air was pure and the climate was healthy.
Anu, Meethi, their mother Rewa and Meethi's attendant Charu came to Bhutan for the prescribed holiday. By a strange co-incidence Joydeep was here too with his wife Lakshmi and their two children. He saw Meethi quiet unexpectedly while they were sightseeing and felt completely shattered at the change he saw in her. He could not get rid of his feelings of guilt and followed Anu and Meethi to their rented cottage. Anu was stunned to see him and struggled to control the feelings of intense resentment that welled up inside her. She was also worried in case Meethi had a setback when she met him - but strangely, Meethi did not recognize him at all! She continued to call him Mr. Roy after she was introduced to him never dreaming that this was in fact her beloved Jojo.
Meethi became quite friendly with Joydeep who kept coming over to their cottage in spite of his wife's reservations, and confided in him about her husband Jojo and her five children. She entreated him to help her find her house at 15 Park Avenue and to help her get away from her sister whom she imagined to be completely tyrannical!
Joydeep was miserable! He felt like a bigamist! He was in a strange situation where he was happily married to a woman he loved and with whom he had had two lovely children; yet, here was another woman who believed she was married to him and whose world with him was totally real to her! Joydeep was nonplussed. Should he go with her to look for 15 Park Avenue after they returned to Calcutta? They would not be able to find the house, of course - no such house existed except in Meethi's imagination! In fact, there was no Park Avenue on the map of Calcutta! Yet, if he did not go, Joydeep felt, he would be letting Meethi down a second time.
Back in Calcutta Joydeep does go with Meethi to look for 15 Park Avenue - to look for something one can never find. But, is Meethi the only one who is looking for the impossible? Is she the only one with delusions? Aren't we all - the so-called 'sane' people of the world - under delusions of our own?

Akash, his son is an equally devoted doctor, who remains duty-bound to both his profession and his fatther. Enter Soniya Kapoor, a rich, arrogant young woman, who is used to getting things done her way. Beneath her veneer of defensive sensitivity however, is an individual who has shades of compassion. The agreement states that on marrying Soniya, her father Gulshan will help finance the hospital project. The original matter of the world is believed to be water. The theory of evolution is reflected in the progression of the fist five AVATARS (incarnations) of the Lord Vishnu's ten incarnations. From the Paleolithic men to Mehengarh to Kot Diji in Pakistan and Kalibangan in Rajasthan show the traces of the transition from what was already developed village culture to an urban culture. The Indus plains were dominated by Mohen-jo-Daro and Harrapa. This episode describes how the impact of Indus civilizations was felt far beyond its borders in Central and West Asia.

BOBBY* (A superhit movie by Raj Kapoor - greatest showman of India)
Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Pran, Premnath, Durga Khote, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani One of the last Raj Kapoor classics, Bobby is the love story of two tender young hearts caught in the flush of first love. Raj (Rishi Kapoor), eighteen, just out of school and the only son of wealthy parents, is the lonely, poor little rich boy who finds companionship and love and comfort in the company of Bobby (Dimple Kapadia), a sweet, innocent sixteen. But this path of true love is strewn with too many thorns - social disparity, wealth and adults who have long forgotten the sweet agony of love. Bobby is the story of how these two young lovers are pitted against a world that no longer understands how love can conquer everything and triumphs. Bobby is a milestone in hindi cinema for several reasons. It saw the debut of Dimple Kapadia, one of Indian cinema's finest actresses, it became an icon for young lovers and its songs ('Hum Tum Ik Kamre Mein' and 'Jhoot Bole Kauva Kate') scored by Laxmikant Pyarelal became evergreen hits, capturing the urgent, sweet innocence of young love.
Bollywood Hollywood - A Deepa Mehta film in English
Rahul Khanna, Lisa RAy, Moushmi Chatterji, Dina Pathak Rahul Seth (Rahul Khanna) is a dashing young millionaire who believes he is "western" enough to rebel against his mother (Moushmi Chatterjee) and Grandmother (Dina Pathak). They are not keen about his Caucasian girlfriend Kimberly (Jessica Pare), who, to make matters worse, is a pop star. Before you can say "Karmic Intervention," Kimberly dies in a freak accident and Rahul is devastated. Instead of allowing him to mourn in peace, Rahul'S mother sees the opportunity she's been waiting for. She threatens to call off his sister's wedding unless he finds himself a "Nice Indian Girl." Rahul enlists the services of Sue (Lisa Ray), who accepts the deal to pose as his Indian bride-to-be. Slowly, Sue endears herself to Rahul's family. She cracks a tough nut like his grandmother, becomes friends with his sister and younger brother and even calls the shots with his chauffeur (Ranjit Chowdhry). It seems that everyone is falling in love with Sue. Even, perhaps, Rahul. During the course of his sister's marriage celebrations, Sue breaks through Rahul's tough exterior and helps him find his heart again. But an incident changes things. Does Rahul accept Sue for who she is and what she represents? Lisa seems to have a natural flair for comedy and a knack to tickle the funny bone. Moreover, she has grooved perfectly into the role that is pretty much close to her real self. Rahul Khanna too deliver goods playing the ‘half-confused, half-assured’ young man who gradually falls in love with a girl who ‘detests’ the Indian men as ‘chumps’. All in all, ‘Bollywood Hollywood’ is a film that will bring a broad smile to faces, even the brooding ones. Deepa Mehta is best known for making controversial, searing dramas like Fire and Earth, and has earned a reputation as the new voice of Indian cinema. Her latest film is a change of pace. Set in Canada, Bollywood / Hollywood is a comedy that infuses a North
American sensibility to the conventional Bollywood formula

EK DUJE KE LIYE*
Kamal Hassan, Rati Agnihotri & Madhavi This modern Romeo and Juliet is the tragic story of Vaasu, a South Indian and Sapna, a North Indian who fall in love but are kept apart by the huge abyss of the prejudices of caste and language that their parents seem to hold more dear than the happiness of their children. Ultimately the abyss swallows them and they commit suicide...
Ek Duuje Ke Liye is director K. Balachander's Hindi remake of his own super hit Telugu film "Maro Charithra". This film is a watershed of sorts because it marked the debut into Hindi films of 4 stars of the South Indian film industry, K. Balachander, Kamal Hassan, Rati Agnihotri and S.P. Balasubramaniam. The film itself was a huge success, becoming the biggest grosser of 1981. But Rati Agnihotri and S.P. Balasubramaniam were the only two benefeciaries, both becoming top stars in their field, SP remaining so even today. Apart from Kamal Hassan and Rati Agnihotri's performances and a memorable cameo by Madhavi. The music of the film, scored by Laxmikant-Pyarelal was very successful, remaining till today, especially "Tere Mere Beech Mein", "Hum Bane Tum Bane" and the cutely comical love duet, "Mere Jeevan Saathi".

FIRE (English) - $26.95
Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Kulbushan Kharbanda, Jaaved Jaferi Banned in India, this 1996 film by Deepa Mehta powerfully demonstrates the struggle of two women in love in a culture so deeply entrenched in ritual and tradition. All this against a backdrop of an India which itself is struggling for freedom from these same values. This film is both political and personal and never too preachy or idealistic on either front. It is easy to see why "Fire" has caused riots in India, but tragic nonetheless. A true film such as this one deserves to be seen by all people of the world, not just privileged westerners.
FIZA* -
Hrithik Roshan, Karishma Kapur, Jaya Bachchan
Anatomy of communal riots in India as seen through the eyes of Fiza a girl in search of her brother, who disappeared during the communal one such riot of 1993 in Mumbai. The film is centered around the relationship between a widowed mother, living in the hope that her son will one day return, and her daughter who, fed up with living with uncertainty, decides to go in search of her brother. Hrithik Roshan has played a great Role.
