HAZAAR CHAURASI KI MAA*
(Mother of 1084 - Unrated w/English Subtitles)
A Govind Nihalani Film - Winner of National Film Festival Award for the Best Film 1998 - DVD Release 2003
Jaya Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas, Nandita Das
Given its material (which was adapted from a novel by Mahaswati Deva), the film has the potential of becoming overtly political (like Constantin Costa-Gavras' "Z") or expressly melodramatic (like Regis Wargnier's "Indochine"). But it is a fine attribute of the film that it provides just enough background for the viewers to become acquainted with the intense sociopolitical events in India (particularly in West Bengal) in the 1970s---a radical outlawed movement, the "Naxalbari," proves to be major headache for the established leadership---and keeps finely checked and nuanced the thoughts and feelings of the characters that the result is a quietly powerful and moving drama of loss, alienation and enlightenment.
The brutal murder of a radical and forward-thinking son causes for the mother to embark on a journey of self-examination and -discovery---asking questions as to the circumstances that led to her son's untimely death, what made her overlook and take for granted her son's "secret" activities, and seeing in her own family the very things her son had rebelled against (complacent, hypocritical, reactionary and bourgeois attitudes and values in modern society).
The film proceeds on a slow and reflective pace so as to be proper to its conversational approach, which is of such a length that the characters gradually open their minds and hearts to the viewers regarding the lamentable family loss and the state of their society in general. Take careful notice of the scene where the mother visits her son's girlfriend, who is also a member of the movement and where mother and son "meet" one another for the last time.
To be distinguished too are the stunning performances, specially those provided by the actors who played the beleaguered mother, the loving aunt and the ill-fated son.
If you missed the opportunity to see it in rare festivals of Indian films, don't miss opportunity to buy "Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa." on dvd or vhs now.

Ashok Kumar, Veena, Nargis, Chandramohan, Shah Nawaz, K.N. Singh
Classical spectacular featuring the 16th Century. Mughal emperor Humayun (Ashok Kumar). Advocating communal harmony, a policy prompted by contemporary developments, the film stresses the friendship between the victorious Babar (Nawaz) and the defeated Rajputs; he asks the Rajkumari (Veena), daughter of the slain Rajput King, to assume her father's throne and to regard Babar as a father. In the latter part the story, Humayun sacrifices his kingdom to save the Rajkumari. Hamida Bano (Nargis) is a commoner with whom Humayun falls in love, but who turns down his offer of marriage claiming that women, for all kings, are mere playthings. The major highlights of the film are the elaborate Mughal sets and the spectacular battle scenes with elephants and horses. Cecil B.DeMille described the film, in a letter to the film-maker, as a Ômasterpiece of lighting composition. |

Aditya (Akshay Kumar), an automobile engineer in a car company, is as passionate about cars as Shakespeare was about writing. Not only is he an engineer, but also a test driver for the company. A post like that can explain how well he could drive.
Aditya is engaged to Sonia (Bipasha Basu), a fashion designer about to make her mark in the field. As individuals, Aditya and Sonia were not on the same wavelength. Sonia was a 21st Century woman for whom career came first and she believed in changes. And as much as Aditya tried to overlook those facts, they kept coming in the way.
Though the marriage date is fixed, Aditya had to leave for Canada to learn about the technique of a new car model, to be launched in India; while Sonia had to leave for Paris for a fashion show.
Aditya arrives in Canada where his sister Simran (Bhagyashree) is living. He meets the family but cannot live with them as the company has given him an apartment close to the workshop. But he makes it a point to meet the family on weekends.
In between work, co-incidence or destiny makes him bump into Jia (Katrina Kaif) more than once. Jia, daughter of business tycoon Yashwardhan Birla, has come to Canada all alone to shop for her wedding with the business giant, Karan Raichand.
Jia was a simple girl with simple needs. She had got everything she could ask for in her childhood, but never time from her ever so busy father. And now the man her father had chosen for her hardly had any time to spend with her too. And that is when she found a friend in Aditya. Aditya and Jia manage to spend time with each other and as time passes, the friendship between them grows.
Being an amazing driver, Aditya gets a chance from his company to participate in a car rally. And somehow he persuades Jia to participate with him, and wins it too. On returning from the destination of the rally, their car gets stuck in the snow and they have to spend the night together. They share intimate moments, which make them forget that they were engaged, but not to each other.
With passing time, they fail to realize when they start falling in love with each other. But a misunderstanding with Aditya and prior commitment with Karan makes Jia go back to India to get married with Karan. Aditya also comes back to India to get married with Sonia and does not attempt to meet Jia ever again. But fate makes them meet for the last time - at Jia's wedding… |

HUM PANCH* - $1.30
Naseeruddin Shah,Mithun Chakraborty,Raj Babbar
Bapu's first Hindi film remade Puttannna Kangal's Paduvarahalli Pandavaru (1978), derived from a popular Mahabharata legend set in feudal UP. The villanious zamindar Veer Pratap Singh (Puri) is Duryodhan, his sidekick Lala (Kanhaiyalal) is Shakuni and their opponents are the drunken holy man Krishna (Kumar), Bhima (Chakraborty), Arjun (Babbar), etc. The good and the bad perform with straightfaced conviction (which prevents the film from becoming a comedy) a story reduced to a series of action thrills. In many respects this feudal drama ironically echoed Benegal's Nishant (1975), a resemblance reinforced by the presence of Puri, Azmi and Shah

Released on DVD after a long wait this dvd has attracted rave reviews from buyers. Here is one: What a welcome change to see a flick without drug dealers and terrorists. Salman has given his best performance acting with restraint and credibility. Its good to see Monish in a positive role. Karisma is endearing as ever with her energetic yet graceful dances. The music and songs are well filmed. The plot revolves around an ideal family with tons of moolah and focuses on family values. This may not seen realistic but its an entertaining example for all

HUM TUM*
हम तुम
Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee
Hum is "cool". A little self" absorbed, little egotistical, Hum is very confident in social situations. His sharp intellect, and a quick wit, is most often used to achieve his primary goal - bugging girls in general, and Tum in particular! But deep inside, Hum is just a boy. Sometimes a bit too eager to impress, sometimes suprisingly sensitive, Hum is not a uni" dimensional character with single minded characterizations. His actions and emotions reflect that there is a "Nike Guy" within. Hum who understands the difference between pulling someone's leg, and hurting someone's feeling.
Tum is a girl, and she's proud of it. She stands up for herself and who she is. While she's often not a match for Hum's quick wit and incessant bugging, she surely considers herself to be more "Grown Up", and appeases herself in knowing that she is more "mature" than Hum. Tum has her own brand of attitude. She may sometimes be a little aloof, but she genuinely cares for those around her. She's a "sweet" girl, thoughtful, generous, but sometimes a little reserved. She keeps trying to go one up over Hum, to prove once and for all, the facts as she sees them. |
